VOCATIONAL CLASSES YLC recently expanded its academic curriculum to include after-school career skills training for middle school and high school students. The goal of this program is to ensure that, upon graduation, students enter the work world with one or more marketable skills. The training prepares students to either support themselves through college, if necessary, or to begin earning a full-time living wage as a temporary or permanent alternative to higher education. Entrepreneurship is actively encouraged, with basic business and management skills taught to all participants. For the convenience of students and their families, most courses are offered at the YLC campus, with classes beginning shortly after the end of the regular school day. Depending on the subject area, classes meet either once or twice per week. This “special” education will make an enormous difference in students’ lives as they leave high school – high school, not college or even trade school – prepared to enter the work force with marketable skills. These skills will potentially serve them well throughout their lives as a safety net to fall back on regardless of the higher education – or lack thereof – that they choose to pursue after graduation.
